Oen Michael Hammonds

IBM Distinguished Design Executive, IBM Z | AIGA Austin Fellow

Oen Michael Hammonds is a design executive with over 25 years of experience spanning multiple design disciplines. He is an appointed IBM Distinguished Design Executive recognized for his influential leadership and commitment to creating meaningful, human-centered design solutions. His career has been defined by a passion for empowering others, fostering inclusive design practices, and enhancing user experiences.

Oen’s work has taken him around the globe, where he has served as a lecturer, commentator, and thought leader on design and innovation. He has presented at prestigious events such as Cairo Design Week in Egypt, Hue Design Summit in Atlanta, and the Yale Business by Design Conference. In 2020, he was a juror for the Fast Company Innovation by Design Awards. He also served on the National Board of AIGA and was honored as an AIGA Fellow by the AIGA Austin Chapter for his outstanding contributions to the design community.

Oen’s design journey began in Louisville, Kentucky, where his early passion for art and design led him to pursue a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design from Northern Kentucky University, graduating in 1999. During his academic years, Oen’s design talent caught the attention of professional agencies such as the Kentucky Center for the Arts and the American Red Cross, for whom he created many designs. His professional career launched at Benchmark in Cincinnati, Ohio, where he shaped the creative direction for major Procter & Gamble brands, including Noxzema, Olay, Safeguard, and Bounce.

In addition to his corporate success, Oen has always maintained a commitment to community service and mentorship. His creative contributions include work for the Art Directors Club of Cincinnati, Target, Danaher Tool Group, and various regional arts and cultural festivals. As a co-founder of “The Artery,” a non-profit gallery and studio space in Newport, Kentucky, Oen has consistently championed opportunities for emerging artists and designers.

Oen’s philosophy — “Design is art on purpose, with purpose” — drives his approach to work. His ability to combine fine art sensibilities with intentional design principles has resulted in innovative solutions that prioritize clarity, empathy, and impact. His deep commitment to service, shaped by his experiences as a Boy Scout, Red Cross youth volunteer, Army veteran, and non-profit board member, continues to influence his leadership style, emphasizing collaboration, trust, and empowerment.

As a design leader, educator, and advocate, Oen is dedicated to pushing the boundaries of design while inspiring the next generation of creatives to pursue meaningful and impactful careers.
